ISLAMABAD – In a significant move to deepen bilateral relations, Pakistan conferred its highest civil award, the Nishan-e-Pakistan, upon the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, during his official state visit on Monday.

The prestigious award was presented by President Dr. Arif Alvi at a formal ceremony held at the Aiwan-e-Sadr, the presidential palace. The event highlighted the enduring friendship and shared aspirations between the two populous Muslim nations.

Addressing the gathering, President Alvi emphasized the deep-rooted historical, cultural, and religious bonds linking Pakistan and Indonesia. “Our relationship is not merely diplomatic; it is a fraternal connection between two brotherly peoples,” he stated. He expressed Pakistan’s firm commitment to expanding cooperation across diverse sectors, including trade, investment, defense, and people-to-people exchanges.

President Joko Widodo, commonly known as Jokowi, accepted the honor with gratitude. He described the Nishan-e-Pakistan as a symbol of the mutual respect and strong partnership between the two countries. “This award is not just for me, but for all the people of Indonesia,” he remarked. He reiterated Indonesia’s desire to elevate the strategic partnership, focusing on collaborative efforts in economic recovery, food security, and countering common challenges.

The ceremony was attended by high-level officials from both countries, including federal ministers and senior diplomats. Observers note that this high-profile visit and the conferment of the top award are expected to inject fresh momentum into bilateral ties. Key areas likely to see enhanced collaboration include increased trade volumes, joint ventures in the halal industry, and closer coordination on regional and international forums.

The Nishan-e-Pakistan is awarded to foreign citizens who have rendered exceptional service to Pakistan or the advancement of international friendship. President Widodo’s recognition underscores his and Indonesia’s role as a key partner for Pakistan in the Islamic world and Southeast Asia.
