Apple Overhauls Siri with AI Chatbot in iOS 17
The new Siri will support both voice and text interactions
Tech giant Apple is set to revamp Siri, turning it into an AI-powered chatbot similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new Siri, internally codenamed “Campos,” will be integrated into iOS 17 and could take center stage at Apple’s WWDC presentation in June 2026. The upgraded assistant will handle both voice and text inputs, reflecting Apple’s vision for a more conversational and accessible AI tool.
Apple’s senior vice president Craig Federighi previously emphasized that Siri should operate as a chatbot, with AI features “integrated so it’s there within reach whenever you need it.” The move appears to be a response to the growing popularity and success of AI chatbots in the market.
Apple’s push into AI comes as OpenAI prepares to enter the hardware space, under the guidance of former Apple design chief Jony Ive, potentially setting the stage for direct competition.
The company has faced criticism for lagging behind in the AI race, having delayed the rollout of a “more personalized Siri” multiple times. Last year, Apple explored partnerships with AI firms and tested technologies from competitors, including OpenAI and Anthropic, before ultimately partnering with Google’s Gemini, a collaboration officially confirmed earlier this month.
The introduction of an AI-driven Siri could mark a major shift in Apple’s approach to smart assistants, signaling the company’s renewed efforts to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
