PALM BEACH, FL – An armed individual was shot and killed by law enforcement early Sunday morning after successfully breaching the secure perimeter surrounding President Donald Trump’s private residence, Mar-a-Lago, according to the U.S. Secret Service.

The incident took place at approximately 1:30 a.m. ET when the suspect, identified by officials as a man in his early 20s from North Carolina, entered the estate’s grounds through the north gate. Authorities confirmed that President Trump was not in Florida at the time; he and the First Lady were residing at the White House in Washington, D.C. A White House official stated that the President was briefed on the situation Sunday morning.

Details of the Confrontation

According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, the individual was reportedly carrying a shotgun and a fuel canister. The breach occurred as an employee was exiting the property, allowing the suspect to slip inside.

He managed to advance approximately 20 to 30 yards onto the property before being intercepted by a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy and two Secret Service agents.

“When officers confronted him, commands were given to drop the items he was carrying,” Sheriff Bradshaw explained during a press conference. “The subject complied by dropping the gas can, but subsequently raised the shotgun as if to take aim.”

In response, the deputy and agents opened fire, striking the suspect. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that the officers involved were equipped with body cameras, which are expected to aid in the investigation. No law enforcement personnel were injured during the encounter.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has taken the lead in investigating the incident. Evidence recovery teams are currently processing the scene, and agents are delving into the suspect’s background and digital footprint to establish a possible motive.

Law enforcement sources revealed that the suspect had been reported missing by his mother just the day before, on Saturday. His identity is being withheld pending formal notification of next of kin.

In line with standard protocol, the Secret Service agents involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation proceeds. Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn confirmed that Director Sean Curran is traveling to Florida to oversee post-incident procedures.

Political and Security Context

This shooting adds to a tense backdrop of heightened political security concerns in the United States. The incident is the latest in a series of security threats targeting political figures. It follows the high-profile assassination attempt against Trump in Pennsylvania in July 2024 and a subsequent foiled plot at his Florida golf course in September 2024, for which the perpetrator recently received a life sentence.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt praised the agents’ rapid response in a statement on X, stating they “did exactly what they were trained to do.” Attorney General Pamela Bondi also confirmed she has been in contact with the President and is coordinating with federal partners on the investigation.

Security at Mar-a-Lago

The Mar-a-Lago estate, which frequently serves as a hub for presidential activity and a weekend retreat, has seen significant security enhancements in recent years. Measures now include snipers, bomb-detection K-9 units, and water patrols along the Intracoastal Waterway. However, the club’s unique nature—where paying members and world leaders intermingle—presents ongoing challenges for security screeners.

Authorities are urging residents in the vicinity of the shooting to review footage from their external security cameras and report anything unusual to law enforcement.
