Former Prime Minister Returned to Adiala Jail After Examination, Says Attaullah Tarar

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar on Thursday confirmed that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan was briefly taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for a minor eye procedure and has since returned to Adiala Jail.

Speaking to Geo News, Tarar said eye specialists initially examined Khan at Adiala Jail and recommended further assessment at PIMS. Acting on medical advice, the former prime minister was shifted to the hospital on Saturday night. The procedure, carried out with Khan’s written consent, lasted around 20 minutes. Tarar emphasized that the former premier’s vital signs remained stable throughout and his overall health is satisfactory.

“The hospital visit was solely for a minor eye procedure. Imran Khan is completely healthy,” the minister stated, dismissing circulating social media rumors suggesting otherwise. He added that access to specialist medical care is provided to all prisoners in accordance with jail rules.

The PTI leadership, however, expressed concern over the lack of information provided to Khan’s family. PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Khan described the situation as “grave” and demanded an immediate meeting with the former prime minister. The PTI core committee also called the lack of communication “condemnable and alarming,” urging that family, party leaders, and legal representatives be allowed to meet Khan promptly and that his medical checkups be conducted by Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital doctors.

Tarar explained that all procedures followed standard jail protocols, including formal medical requests submitted by the prisoner, verification by jail authorities, and oversight by qualified medical professionals. He also clarified that prior meetings with visitors were in line with jail rules.

The PTI warned that it would pursue further action, including raising the issue with diplomatic and human rights forums, if delays in medical examinations or access to Khan continued.
